Barossa Improved Grazing Group (BIGG)

The Barossa Improved Grazing Group (BIGG) is a community-driven network of livestock production and farming groups from the Barossa and surrounding areas, including sheep (North Rhine Sheep Group), beef (Mt Pleasant Beef Group), dairy (Barossa Mid-North Dairy Discussion Group) and two (Angaston and Koonunga) local Ag Bureaux.

BIGGs vision is to be a trusted and valuable network supporting innovative, sustainable and resilient grazing businesses. BIGG works in collaboration with a range of state and national stakeholders, industry partners, local businesses and grower groups to cultivate a measurable improvement in Barossa farming communities’ practices through effective delivery of innovative and practical solutions for sustainable grazing systems.

BIGG was established in 2012 and has received funding to support a range of technical and extension projects. Current project include:

Effect of soil borne root diseases on the productivity of sub-clover pastures;
Revegetation demonstration to manage watercourse erosion in the Barossa region,
Maximising pasture production in a variable climate, and
Recovery and management of native pastures after the 2014 Eden Valley Bushfire.

Projects are hosted by local farmers and events are organised to share the learning opportunities. These are managed by Technical Facilitators Brett Nietschke and Georgie Keynes, and administered by the Angaston Agricultural Bureau with the support and guidance of an Advisory Committee.

BIGG is committed to delivering greater productivity and NRM outcomes for its members through the adoption of innovative practice. In recognition of this, in March 2014 BIGG were awarded the 2014 Ag Excellence Alliance Sustainability Award by its peers (sponsored by DEWNR), as ‘an outstanding locally based grower group for its achievements in delivering greater NRM outcomes’.

With new projects in the pipeline and a membership base of over 270 subscribers (and growing), BIGG aims to extend its reach and impact in the future.
