Low Emissions Intensity Farming Systems (LEIFS) project

Low Emissions Intensity Farming Systems (LEIFS) project

The GRDC Low Emissions Intensity Farming Systems project (LEIFS) will explore the value of monitoring and managing emissions, helping Australian grain growers turn emissions risk into productive and profitable opportunities.

It is a $39m co-investment, over 5-years, to explore and demonstrate initiatives that help manage emissions risks and identity practical solutions to lower on-farm emissions intensity.

LEIFS will be delivered across WA, SA and NSW in partnership with GRDC, state government departments and CSIRO.

The project will engage growers to improve regional emissions intensity benchmarks and in partnership, develop tools and insights to inform enterprise decisions.

The South Australian Action Research Network program

SARDI and the Ag Excellence Alliance will deliver the ARN program in SA, which involves working closely with farmers and those that influence their decision making to address farm-scale challenges in monitoring, managing and accounting for Green House Gas emissions. The aim is to establish on-farm demonstration sites to address long-term strategic and tactical approaches to emissions management, and to test the value proposition for measuring, monitoring and reporting GHG emissions.

The ARN takes a co-design approach with the goals of improving grower, service provider and government access to consistent data and knowledge, provide meaningful data-informed insights, to uplift on-farm emissions literacy and to demonstrate a link between emissions intensity and efficiency.

The ARN will build on trusted networks of consultants around the state along with researchers, farming systems groups, Landscape Boards, marketers, financial providers and other stakeholders to contribute to regional hubs that will develop local solutions while working closely with the other LEIFS programs providing data and technical skills.

Getting involved

While currently in the formative stages, there will be ample opportunities to get involved in the design, delivery and participatory activities of LEIFS.
