Using chaff to manage soil salinity and increase crop production
Leighton Wilksch from the Northern Sustainable Soils farm group on the northern Yorke Peninsula of South Australia discusses the salinity issues faced by Scott and Caroline Buzzacott on their Tickera farm. The coastal influence and run of poor seasons resulted in decreased organic matter into his soils that in turn has increased transient salinity, significantly reducing crop yields. Scott explains how he has developed an innovative system of using chaff to increase soil organic matter to significantly increase his crop yields.
