GPSA launches ground-breaking project to establish grain production GHG baseline in South Australia

Grain Producers SA (GPSA) has launched a groundbreaking project to establish a quantified grain production baseline in South Australia.

The initiative, in partnership with Pinion Advisory, is now seeking Expressions of Interest (EOI) from South Australian grain producers to participate.

GPSA is set to provide Greenhouse Gas Emissions (GHG) baselining to nearly 60 grain producers across South Australia's cropping regions. This effort marks the first comprehensive assessment of its kind in the state.

GPSA Chief Executive Officer Brad Perry emphasised the importance of the project for the South Australian grain industry.

"This project is aimed at getting on the front foot and understanding the South Australian grain production baseline, so we can build the case on behalf of growers,” he said.

"GPSA is establishing a Sustainability Roadmap for the South Australian grain sector, and the production baseline will play a vital role in that process.

"We are seeking EOIs from South Australian grain producers to put their name forward to be involved. At the end of the project participants will receive a personalised farm GHG emissions baseline valued at more than $4,000.

"Understanding our emissions footprint is crucial not just for market access, but also for improving overall farm management practices and proving that our farmers are already world class in this area.”

Minister for Primary Industries and Regional Development Clare Scriven said: “It’s great to have these vital partnerships where Federal and State Government along with industry, work together to support South Australian farmers in being more resilient to the impacts of drought and climate change,” she said.

The project will offer grain producers access to specialist advice, providing valuable insights into emissions data collection, tailored to their farm operations. Participants will benefit from an independently verified carbon account for their grain operations, with the entire process offered at no cost.

The project is jointly funded by the Australian Government’s Future Drought Fund and the Government of South Australia.
