“Discovering Myself”: New Connecting Families Workshops for Rural Women in Yorke Peninsula

Jeanette Long and Sharon Honner know what it’s like to live, work and raise a family in a rural area. They understand the challenges and potential rewards that await rural women who are considering:

  • Re-entry to the workforce
  • Widening employment opportunities
  • Becoming more involved as a volunteer in their community or industry
  • Furthering their education

If that sounds like YOU, experienced Ag Consulting Co facilitators, Jeanette and Sharon will be offering workshops in Minlaton (5th-6th Sept) and Kadina (12th-13th Sept) that can help build a personal understanding of:

  • Your strengths, skills and direction
  • Networks
  • How to increase self confidence and self esteem
  • How to manage difficult conversations
  • What’s in your way

Reflecting on the experiences of women taking part in previous workshops, Sharon says, “It’s a wonderful thing to see people build their confidence and become willing to have a go. For a lot of women it is a life changing experience. They come out of it having the confidence to take on something new.”

Courses will be run at Minlaton and Kadina during school hours.  The commitment asked of participants is attendance at:

  •  An initial two day workshop
  • Two following webinars
  • Two hours of personal coaching
  • A final one day workshop

As part of the project, inspirational guest speakers will be utilized to create connections with local volunteer bodies, businesses and also links to Career Development Officers.

“At a recent workshop, we had a woman in her 40s who had a passion for further study but lacked confidence. She’s just enrolled in university for the first time in her life. Another participant wanting to have influence in her industry has been accepted on a management board. Other participants have for the first time taken on positions in their local communities. Prior to participation in the workshop, they didn’t think that they had something of value to offer. This program was the key that unlocked their ability to reach out for new opportunities.”

This project is an initiative of the Government of South Australia as part of the Skills for All in Regions program, and has been developed in conjunction with Regional Development Australia Yorke and Mid North.
