Regional Round Up
June 17 @ 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Guest Speaker: Alex McGorman
Alex McGorman is the owner and manager of Thornby, a historic family farm in South Australia’s Mid Murray. The McGorman family has been farming Thornby for over 120 years, evolving the property into a diversified agricultural enterprise. Today, Thornby spans 8,000 acres, where Alex oversees the operation of an AUS-MEAT accredited lamb feedlot that finishes over 120,000 lambs annually, along with the production of broadacre cereal grains and hay. Thornby’s farming enterprise is supported by a team of over 25 staff members who contribute to its thriving operations.
Alex will provide an update on the current market indicators, discuss the potential impact of the live export phase-out on South Australia, share insights on how feedlotting has built resilience against drought, and offer perspectives on the human resources aspect of their business, including team management and the challenges of maintaining a skilled workforce in the agricultural sector.
