Near Infrared Weed Detection Technology

We’re involved with sale and distribution of a product called the WEED-it. It’s a bit of new technology, that promises to save farmers a lot of money. It’s a mechanism by which you detect weeds and just spray the weed rather than the whole field. So the technology has a sensor, and each sensor controls a nozzle on a boom spray.

The way in which the technology works is that there’s a very bright red light source, and it shines down onto the plants, and if there’s chlorophyll in the plant, it’ll excite that and it will start to emit near infrared. The sensor picks up on the near infrared and turns the nozzle on them, whammo.

So, typically farmers are saving 80 to 90 percent of the chemical.

NIR technology detects weeds so that only weeds are sprayed and not the whole paddock resulting in significant savings.

Brendan Williams from WEED it explains the technology at the Eyre Peninsula Agricultural Research Foundation (EPARF) members day held at the Minnipa Agricultural Centre. Near infra light reflected from growing plants turns on the nozzle in front of the plant to give spray coverage. Chemical usage can be reduced by up to 90%.
