The Pasture Principles package involves an initial two-day workshop and then 6 x on-farm, group based coaching sessions to assist with implementation.

The aim of Pasture Principles is to provide producers with a set of guiding principles that will allow them to manage their pastures confidently regardless of the season, situation or system. The program was developed by Basil Doonan, Principle Consultant at Macquarie Franklin, in conjunction with valuable input from a range of experience individuals and is delivered in South Australia by Simon Vogt of Rural Directions. A key strength of the Pasture Principles package is the focus on the pasture : animal interface and also the in-field coaching sessions to assist with implementation. An excellent manual is provided to all participants.

The Pasture Principles program is offered in a group training environment, the initial two-day workshop covers:

  • the theory behind pasture growth and how plants grow and respond to different conditions and rest periods
  • understanding the language and key principles behind best practice grazing management
  • the introduction of some excellent rules of thumb for animal intake and nutritional requirements at different points in the reproduction cycle
  • managing the pasture base for peak pasture production and peak pasture quality
